National Healthy Skin Month

November is National Healthy Skin Month. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) started it in 1997 to remind everyone that good skin care is a lifelong habit — for skin, hair and nails.

Who should take part? Everyone, from newborns to people over 100. That makes it a great month to talk healthy-skin basics with every client on your books.

6 tips for healthy skin for a lifetime

1. Keep the routine simple. A gentle cleanser, a moisturizer and sunscreen are the daily non-negotiables. Not sure where to start? You can’t go wrong with our Facial Gel Cleanser, Green Tea Cleanser, Rose Hydrating Cream or Light Moisture Cream.

2. Introduce new ingredients gradually. Too many new products at once can irritate the skin. Add one at a time so you can see how the skin responds.

3. Use warm water, not hot. Hot water strips the skin and can leave it dry, tight and irritated — on the face and the body.

4. Exfoliate gently. Over-exfoliating or using the wrong method can cause irritation, breakouts and redness.

5. Protect the skin from UV rays. Seek shade, wear sun-protective clothing, and use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Apply it about 15 minutes before going outside — even on cloudy or cool days.

6. Check the skin regularly. Skin cancer found early is highly treatable.

When should a client see a dermatologist?

Refer a client to a board-certified dermatologist when you notice a spot that looks different from the rest, or one that is changing, itching or bleeding. As the professional who sees their skin up close, you’re often the first to notice.

Share these tips with your clients

Post them in your treatment room, add them to your social media this month, or go over them during a facial. Your clients will thank you for it.
